    📋Ingredients

    • Chocolate instant pudding
    • Milk - We like to use reduced fat.
    • Whipped topping - Make sure it has thawed at room temperature for at least 20 - 30 minutes.
    • Crushed Oreos
    • Gummy worms

    See recipe card for quantities.

    📖Substitutions & Variations

For the recipe we've made here we've used the classic gummy worms and chocolate pudding. However, there are many different substitutions and variations you can do to these dirt cups to customize them for your flavor and occasion needs.

    • Use different gummies - instead of using a classic gummy worm you can use sour gummy worms, gummy bears or any other kind of gummy candy you want to top your cups.
    • Change up the pudding- chocolate pudding is usually the go-to for these, however, you can use any flavor you like such as vanilla or even banana.
    • Make it thicker and creamier - substitute the whipped topping for 8 oz of cream cheese to get a thicker creamier pudding mixture.
    • Make a dirt cake. Instead of making individual servings, you can make this as one big cake in an 8x8 pan.
    • Make sand cups. Use vanilla pudding and golden Oreos to make this look like sand instead of dirt. You can use gummy fish or other sea themed gummies. Or even Teddy grahams to put on top.
    • Birthday themed - Use your favorite flavor pudding and any type of cookie to crumble in the layers. Then add festive sprinkles and a candle in the middle.
    • Halloween themed - Add mini pumpkin candies, eyeballs and other halloween-themed treats on top.
    • Valentine's themed - Use strawberry pudding and strawberry Oreos. Then add conversation hearts to the top.
    • Easter themed - You can use mint cream Oreos for a little green color. And then use mini candy eggs, peeps or other Easter themed candies to add to the top.

If you like Oreo and pudding combinations but don't want to have individual layered desserts, try out this Oreo fluff instead.

    ⏲️Instructions

Here are the step-by-step directions and process shots so that you can make the perfect putting dirt cups.

Pouring chocolate pudding mix into a mixing bowl.

Step one: Add chocolate pudding mix to mixing bowl.

Whisking chocolate pudding together in a mixing bowl.

Step two: Pour milk into bowl with pudding mix and whisk for 1 - 2 minutes until it is combined and starts to thicken. Let it set for a few more minutes to thicken up.

Adding whipped topping to chocolate pudding in a mixing bowl.

Step three: Scoop thawed whipped topping into bowl with chocolate pudding. Carefully fold it all together until it is well combined.

Crushed oreos in a ziplock bag.

Step four: Crumble up Oreos. You can use a food processor. Or, you can put them in a ziplock bag and use the end of a wooden spoon or rolling pin to break them up. You want them in fine pieces.

Spooning chocolate pudding into a glass.

Step five: Take your glass cup and scoop a few spoonfuls of pudding mixture into the bottom.

Crumbled oreos layered on chocolate pudding in a glass.

Step six: Then add a few pinches of Oreos to layer on top of the pudding.

Step seven: Repeat layering of pudding and Oreos until the glass is filled. Ending with a layer of Oreos. Then, add a few gummy worms to the top.

Hint: as you feel your cups, use a ratio of 2:1 pudding to Oreo crumbs on each layer so that they are not too crunchy with cookie crumbs.

    ⭐Recipe Tips for Success

    • Crushing the cookies- You can use a food processor to crush the cookies. Or, if you want to save having an extra dish to wash, place the cookies in a Ziploc bag and crush them with the handle of a spoon or a rolling pin. Make sure the cookies are finely crushed.
    • Whisk your pudding- using a whisk to mix the pudding together will result in its setting thicker and creamier than if you try to just stir it.
    • Make ahead- You can make these cups up to a few days in advance. But do be aware that if they set for more than eight or so hours the cookies could become soggy and the gummy worms can be hard from being in the fridge.
    • Thaw whipped topping- make sure that the whipped topping is thawed before using, otherwise it is very difficult to fold into the pudding. To thaw, you can sit on the counter at room temperature for 30 - 60 minutes or in the fridge overnight.

    Storage

These are super easy to make in advance or to store leftovers of.

Storage: You can make these in advance if you want, or store leftovers. Simply put cling wrap over the cup and put them in the refrigerator for 3 - 5 days. Note that the Oreo's will get a little soggy the longer they sit. Also, gummy worms can get quite hard when they are cold.

Freezing: if you want to serve these as a frozen treat, or if you want to store them for longer than a few days then you can freeze these. Simply put them in an airtight container and put into the freezer.

If serving as a frozen treat, it just takes around 3 - 4 hours for it to get partially frozen. If keeping them in the freezer, they can be stored for about 3 months. Defrost overnight in the refrigerator.

    Notes

    Tips
    • Crushing Oreos - you can use a food processor or a ziplock bag and rolling pin/wooden spoon.  Make sure that oreos are finely crushed.
    • Thaw whipped topping - make sure to thaw the whipped topping before adding it in, or it won't mix well.  Thaw it for 30 - 60 minutes at room temperature or overnight in the fridge.
    • Don't overmix pudding - make sure to use a whisk and not overmix the pudding or it won't thicken and will become runny.
    Storage, Make Ahead & Freezing
    • Make ahead - you can make this in advance up to about 8 hours without the Oreos getting too soggy.  It is best to add the gummy worms at serving because they get hard when cold.
    • Storage - if you have leftovers, cover tightly with cling wrap and store in fridge for 3 - 5 days.  Oreos may become a little soggy and gummy worms may be a little hard.
    • Freezing - you can serve as a frozen treat - pop in the freezer for 3 - 4 hours.  Or, store in the freezer for up to 3 months in an airtight container.  Defrost in the fridge overnight.
