Air fryer chicken parmesan on a plate.

Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan

Justin
Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan is a healthier twist on the classic Italian dish, featuring crispy breaded chicken topped with marinara sauce and melted cheese. This recipe uses an air fryer to achieve that golden, crunchy coating without deep frying, cutting down on oil while still delivering incredible flavor and texture. The chicken is marinated in a garlicky egg mixture, coated in seasoned Panko breadcrumbs, and finished with tomato sauce and cheese for a restaurant-quality meal at home.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 chicken breasts cut in half through the middle
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoon garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoon parsley chopped (plus additional for optional garnish)
  • 4 teaspoon Italian seasoning divided
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Panko-style bread crumbs
  • Oil as called for with airfryer
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 cup shredded cheese
  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  • In a small casserole dish or tupperware container, combine the eggs, minced garlic and parsley.
  • Marinate the chicken in the egg mixture for 15 minutes or overnight.
  • Place the flour in one shallow bowl and the Panko bread crumbs in a second. Have a clean plate ready and also grease a 9” x 13” casserole dish and set aside.
  • Stir 2 teaspoon of the Italian seasoning into the flour.
  • Dredge each piece of chicken in the flour, then back into the egg mixture and then into the Panko bread crumbs.
  • Place on a plate as you coat all of the chicken halves.
  • Add oil to the airfryer, as called for by your machine's instructions.
  • Preheat airfryer to 375F.
  • Once the airfryer is heated, add the breaded chicken breasts and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Stir the remaining 2 teaspoons of Italian seasoning into the tomato sauce.
  • Flip the chicken, top each chicken breast with 2 Tablespoons of tomato sauce and a sprinkle of cheese. Then cook for an additional 2-4 minutes, as needed. (The chicken needs to reach an internal temperature of 165F, but the browning of the breading will give you a good indication of how much time the chicken should be cooked for.)

Notes

Use a meat thermometer to check that your chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F - this is crucial for food safety. However, be careful not to overcook it, as chicken breasts can dry out quickly. Start checking at the 7-minute total cook time mark, and remember the chicken will continue cooking slightly after you remove it from the air fryer.
Store leftover chicken parmesan in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place back in the air fryer at 350°F for 3-4 minutes to restore the crispy coating, or microwave for 1-2 minutes if you don't mind a softer texture. The air fryer reheating method is highly recommended to maintain that delicious crunch.
