One of our favorite movies of all time is The Wizard of Oz. So naturally we decided we had to figure out how to make Wizard of Oz Rice Krispie Treats.
How to Make Wizard Of Oz Rice Krispie Treats
This is another one of those happy accident desert projects. We had some extra yellow Rice Krispie Treat rectangles leftover after making our Lego Rice Krispie Treats and on a whim kind of staggered them in a brick pattern.
We were pretty pleased with how much it looked like a yellow brick road. We took a couple of pictures and then moved on to the next project.
A few minutes later, we found a cookie cutter in the shape of a shoe. We also happened to have some red Rice Krispie Treats leftover from our Sesame Street Rice Krispie Treats. You can see where this is going.
Let's get started...or should we say, "Follow the yellow (Rice Krispie Treat) road!"
Step One
Start out with a large stock pot, add in some butter, and set your stovetop heat to medium. It should only take a couple of minutes, but your butter will melt.
Once your butter has completely melted, you can add in a 16 ounce bag of Jet Puff Marshmallows. Use your spatula to stir until your marshmallows and butter are completely melted together.
You can speed this part of the process up by using our microwave Rice Krispie Treats recipe instead of the traditional method.
Take the first of your two food coloring and squirt them into the marshmallow mix. We decided to start with red.
Stir the food coloring into the melted marshmallows until everything is a bright red color. You can add more food coloring to achieve the appropriate level of brightness.
Step Two
Take out your box of Rice Krispies cereal. Add 6 measured cups into the melted marshmallows. Stir them together with your spatula until everything is evenly coated.
If the Rice Krispies take a bit more food coloring to reach the color you want, that is perfectly okay.
Step Three
We are making full batches of each color for this recipe. If you don't want to make as much, you can cut the ingredients by half and use an 8 x 8 baking pan. But for a full size recipe we use a 9 x 13 baking pan.
Take your baking pan and spray the bottom and inside walls with canola oil spray. You can use whatever baking spray you prefer, we just like canola oil because it is flavorless and works well.
Scoop the contents of your large stock pot into the pan. Use your spatula to spread the mixture into the pan. Do this until it is completely flat and even against the bottom.
Set to the side and allow to cool. Now go back and repeat these steps for your yellow Rice Krispie Treats.
Step Four
Now that you have both colors made and cooled, it's time for cutting. This time we will start with yellow.
We start with yellow because it is the simplest cut. All you need to do is take a sharp knife and cut your entire pan into 2 x 1 or 4 x 2 inch rectangles.
Once they are cut, you want to remove them from the pan and arrange them in a brick like pattern. You can see the picture as reference if you're unsure of how that should look.
With your yellow rectangles cut it's time to move on to red. Take out your shoe shaped cookie cutters. Push the shoe shaped cookie cutter into the Red Rice Krispie Treats.
Oftentimes, the Rice Krispie Treats are thicker than the cookie cutter, so you'll need to push down pretty hard. You may also want to take that same knife from the yellow Rice Krispie Treats part and trim around the edges of the shoe.
If you have the same shoe cookie cutter that we have, it is likely in the shape of a high heel. We all know Dorothy did not wear stilettos. She wore ruby red slippers. So use that knife to cut the heel right off of those shoes.
Continue to do this until you have as many red slippers as you want. Now take your ruby red slippers and place them along the yellow brick road.
We hope you enjoyed making this dessert project. Like we said, it was a happy accident, but we're glad we made it. Let us know if you made it too in the comments below or take a picture and tag us on Instagram.
