How to make Red Rice Krispie Treats
Truth is, Red Rice Krispie Treats are very fun to make. They also work is an awesome base for several other different types of Rice Krispie Treats projects. For instance, our Sesame Street Rice Krispie Treats, our Monster Rice Krispie Treats, and pretty much all of our Christmas Rice Krispie Treats start with a red rice crispy treat bass..
The secret to Red Rice Krispie Treats is all in the food coloring. Don’t worry it isn’t too difficult in fact if you have any experience with some of our other food coloring Rice Krispie Treats like blue, yellow, green, watermelon Rice Krispie Treats, you’ll be just fine.
Step One
Place your large stock pot on your stovetop and set the heat to medium. Now put 3 tablespoons of butter into the pot and allow to melt.
Once your butter has completely melted add in one full bag of Jet Puff Marshmallows. Stir the marshmallows into the melted butter with a spatula until everything is completely melted together. Your marshmallows should have a buttery yellow sheen to them.
Take out your red food coloring and squirt it into the melted marshmallow mix. We like to use a very liberal amount of food coloring to make sure that our Red Rice Krispie Treats are as bright as possible.
Again, you'll want to use your spatula for this. Stir until everything is completely red. Reduce your heat to low or medium low.
You want to reduce the heat so that your marshmallows do not overcook. Overcooked marshmallows become brittle and are very difficult to stir later on in the process.
If you want this first part to go a lot faster, you can always follow the steps from our microwave Rice Krispie Treats and just add in food coloring.
Step Two
Take out six measured cups of Rice Krispies cereal and dump it into the red marshmallow mix. Mix everything together until your Rice Krispies and marshmallow are thoroughly covered in red sticky goodness.
Sometimes you will need to add more food coloring into the mix after adding the Rice Krispies because they soak up so much of the moisture, they do not get bright enough. This is supposed to be a fun recipe, so have at it with the food coloring and get your treats as bright as you can.
Step Three
Take out your can of cooking spray. We prefer to use Canola oil, but any flavorless baking spray will do. Coat the bottom and inside walls of a 9 x 13 baking pan with the cooking spray.
Start to scoop your Red Rice Krispie Treats batter into the 9 x 13 baking pan. Now use your spatula to smash the mix. Squish into the bottom of the pan until everything is completely flat and even.
Set them to the side and allow them to cool. If you want to speed up the process, you can put them in the refrigerator or even the freezer if you're really impatient (like we are).
Step Four
After your Rice Krispie Treats have cooled take out a sharp knife and cut them into small 2 inch squares. Depending on how good you are at eyeballing measurements, you should be able to get between 15 and 16 squares out of a pan.
After they're cut, simply serve an enjoy!
