Supplies
- spatula
- large stock pot or Microwave Safe Bowl
- Measuring Cup
- 9 x 13 baking pan
Ingredients
- 6 Cups Rice Krispies Cereal
- 16 oz of Jet Puff Marshmallows
- 4 Tbs Salted Butter
- 1 cup Peanut Butter
- 1 cup Chocolate Chips
- (optional) non-stick canola oil spray
Instructions
Step one
Melt 4 tbs butter, melt 10 oz of marshmallows and mix thoroughly together. You can do the melting on the stove top on low heat or in the microwave.
Melting then in the microwave is faster, but stove top gives a bit more control to get the marshmallows just right.
If you use the microwave, you can melt both together at once. Versus needing to do the separately on the stove top.
For the microwave, I usually stick them in for 30 second increments checking and stirring then adding more time.
On the stove you'll want to first melt the butter on low heat, then add your marshmallows (also on low heat) and stir while they melt. This process usually takes upwards of 10 minutes.
Step two
Next, you'll want to add and add your 6 cups of rice krispies and 1 cup of peanut butter into your marshmallow and butter mixture.
Step three
Make sure to get the rice Krispies, peanut butter, marshmallows and butter thoroughly combined by stirring them all together. You'll want to have as even a distribution as possible.
Step four
Spread your mixture into a pre-greased pan. The mixture is pretty sticky, so it's best to also use a pre-greased spatula to help get it spread.
Note: Make sure not to pack it down into the pan too much or your treats will be packed and hard.
Step Five
Once your bars have set. Usually takes 20 or so minutes. You'll want to add your chocolate.
Take about a cup of chocolate chips and melt them in the microwave. You want them to be melted, but not too thin. I like to use 30 second intervals stirring in between.
Step Six
Once melted, stir them up and then spread the chocolate like icing on top of your rice Krispie Treats.
Tips
A few tips to make sure you end up with the perfect, chewy treats when you are done:
- Don't heat the marshmallows too long: if you overheat the marshmallows you will end up with hard treats that are not the chewy texture we all know and love. Stir those marshmallows well during the melting process to disperse the heat and make sure you have minimal heating time.
- Use your favorite peanut butter: You can use natural peanut butter, low sodium peanut butter, crunchy peanut butter, creamy peanut butter - really whatever type of peanut butter is your favorite.
- Get Decadent: For a little extra yum, top them with peanut butter chips and more chocolate chips.
