Sometimes you just want to make something pretty. If you feel the same way, this flower Rice Krispie Treats recipe is definitely for you.
How to make Flower Rice Krispie Treats
I'll be honest, this recipe was kind of an accident. We were making some other color Rice Krispie Treats and had some leftover pieces. So instead of throwing it all away and letting it go to waste, we thought maybe we can do something creative with it and make something new.
And from that creativity came flower Rice Krispie Treats. We decided to turn it into a recipe so that you can make a prettier version. All you need to do is make original Rice Krispie Treats, add some food coloring, and be ready to get your hands a little dirty...or at least sticky.
To make this project a little bit easier, you can use cookie cutters. If you have one shaped like a teardrop or a raindrop, that would work great. If you're unfamiliar with how to use a cookie cutter with Rice Krispie Treats, you can look back at our Dinosaur Rice Krispie Treats, our baby shark Rice Krispie Treats, or our Rice Krispie Treat chicks.
And if you've never used food coloring in Rice Krispie Treats before, you can check out our blue, red, green, and yellow Rice Krispie Treats recipes. If you do them once, you'll definitely get the hang of it.
Let's get to the recipe!
Step One
The first thing you're going to need to do with this recipe is decide how many colors you want. For this round we chose three; red, green, and yellow.
You will also want to figure out how many flowers you want to make and, thus, what size batches you want to make. We are going to make each color in an 8 x 8 pan. The three batches should make a total of 12 multicolored flowers.
Once you figure out how much you want to make, get out your large stock pot and set your stovetop heat to medium. Put 2 tablespoons of butter into your large stock pot and allow to melt.
Once your butter is melted, grab your marshmallows. You want to use a 16 ounce bag of Jet Puff Marshmallows and split them into thirds. Put slightly over 5 ounces of those marshmallows into the pot of melted butter and stir.
Continue stirring until the marshmallows have completely melted and they have a nice yellow, buttery sheen. Take out the first of your three food colorings. We will start with yellow.
Squirt your yellow food coloring into the melted marshmallows. Stir the food coloring into the marshmallows until it is bright yellow. Remember, we want these flowers to be bright and fun, so use as much food coloring as it takes.
When your marshmallows are the appropriate color, Reduce your heat to low or medium low. This keeps the marshmallows from overcooking. If they overheat, they will become brittle and difficult to stir.
Step Two
Pull out your box of Rice Krispies cereal. You want to measure out three cups of cereal and pour them into the yellow marshmallow mix.
Stir the cereal into the marshmallows until everything is sufficiently coated. At this time, If the cereal is not the bright yellow color you want it to be, you can add more food coloring.
Step Three
Take out your 8 x 8 baking pan and your can of canola oil spray and coat the bottom of the pan and the inside walls. Scoop the contents of your large stock pot into the bottom of the pan.
Use your spatula and spread the mix evenly across the bottom. Continue to do this until everything is completely flat and even across the pan.
Set this aside and allow to cool. Now go back and repeat steps one through three until you have all of the colors you need. Once you have all of your colors, move on to step four.
Step Four
Once you've made all of your colors and everything is cooled, it's time to cut and design. This is where it takes a bit of creativity.
If you have a raindrop shaped cookie cutter, you can use that for the petals. You can also use a sharp knife, if you have a steady hand, and cut the petals in the shape that you want.
You can design these however you like. Our suggestion is to have a flower with one color as the center ball with seven petals of another color. You can see our picture as a reference point.
An alternate idea would be to have the center ball as one color and then alternate the petals in different colors. As I said above, this recipe gives room for a lot of artistic freedom. The important thing is to have fun.
