Short of enlisting an army's worth of fireworks, there is no better way to show your patriotism than to make these Red, White, and Blue Rice Krispie Treats. Well, maybe there are, but these are still super cute and very festive.
How To Make Red, White, And Blue Rice Krispie Treats
Celebrate Independence Day with these wonderfully patriotic red, white and blue, Rice Krispie Treats. This is a more complicated, layered recipe. But is still not too tough to pull off. If you've made Peeps Rice Krispie Treats, Watermelon Rice Krispie Treats, or the Frozen Themed Rice Krispie Treats, you'll do just fine.
This recipe came together so much better than we could have even hoped for. We had an idea for a layered flag style dessert but weren't completely sure how to pull it off. This whipped cream pound cake is another great red, white and blue dessert.
As you can see from the picture below, we did. And we completely believe that you can do it too!
Step One
Prior to starting this recipe you will want to take all of your ingredients and sort them into ⅓s. That will make it much easier than trying to figure out portions during the process.
Now with everything sorted, pull out your large stock pot, put a ⅓ tablespoon of butter in it, and place it on your stove top. Set your heat for medium and stir until your butter is melted.
Step Two
Once your butter is melted, add ⅓ a bag of Jet-Puffed marshmallows into the pot. Use your spatula to stir them until they are pretty well mixed.
Now add in your first pack of Jell-o. We wanted red on the bottom so we used the cherry Jell-o first. If you've made our chocolate pudding Rice Krispie Treats you will be used to the difference in thickness of the batter. Stir the Jell-o in until it is well mixed and there is no powder leftover.
If, for whatever reason, you don't want to flavor your layers, you can just use food coloring like in our Baby Shower Rice Krispie Treats.
Add in 2 cups of Rice Krispies and stir them until everything is completely mixed. You will notice some of the Rice Krispies will start to turn red; being dyed from the Jell-o mix.
Step Three
Pull out your 9x13 baking pan. Spray it, along with your spatula, with some Canola oil. This step is important because without spraying your spatula, you will end up with a colorful mess and they spatula will dye the other layers with red (or you could use multiple spatulas, but who's spatula rich these days, amirite?).
Move the red mix from your pot and into your baking pan. Then use your sprayed spatula to flatten everything out into the bottom of the baking pan.
Now place your red layer to the side and move on to the white layer.
Step Four
You will essentially want to repeat steps 2 and 3. The only exception is you won't add in the Jell-o. This step is basically a mini version of our original Rice Krispie Treats recipe.
So, once you have your Rice Krispies mixed well with your marshmallow mix, move the pot to your 9x13 pan again.
Step Five
Scoop out your Rice Krispie Treat mix and put it directly on top of the red layer you made a few minutes ago.
Continue to flatten it out until it completely covers the red layer. Now place this pan to the side once again. We recommend covering it at this point.
If you cover the pan, the cover will trap in some heat and allow the two layers to bond together.
Step Six
For our final layer we will again repeat steps 2-3 but use blue Jell-o instead of red. We did add in a little bit of food coloring because the Jell-o was not quite blue enough. This is similar to the Green St. Patrick's Day Rice Krispie Treats.
Mix in your last 2 cups of Rice Krispies and stir until you have a nice blue Krispie mix.
Step Seven
Once again, pull out your baking pan with the previous two layers. Scoop your blue layer on top of the white layer and smooth out with your spatula.
As with the previous layer, you will want to place a cover over your mix and place to the side so that all three layers can bond together (like kids at summer camp...except the part where you eat them later).
Step Eight
Finally, after you're dessert has bonded together you can add a healthy dose of sprinkles. No specified amount here, you'll feel it when you've added the right amount.
Now give yourself a salute, cut it, and enjoy!
